Movie review: ‘Adore’

"Adore"Anne Fontaine directs the Australian-French film “ADORE” starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright. The film is based on a novella by British writer Doris Lessing called The Grandmothers. At one point in the film Watt’s character Lil says “We’ve crossed a Line” and that sums up the theme.

What I adore about the film among so many elements including the cinematography, acting, and the score is the taboo subject and boundary pushing subject matter handled in such a beautiful, tender way. Anne Fontaine directed the scenes with an artists brush, cradling those moments that could easily feel licentious into an exploration of true human experience, she lets the audience identify. It’s rather easy to make someone a one-note villain and far harder to make a complex, fallible human being.

Robin Wright radiates with stunning, elegant glamour and Naomi Watts exudes a pure, sensitive beauty that make both their characters portraits of multidimensional women not caricatures.

“Adore” explores a taboo subject in an idyllic, mystical setting of a beach paradise where it seems these two mothers and sons are the only people that exist. At some points although you know it’s wrong, you want their affairs to continue (The mothers are having affairs with each others son) and isn’t that the whole definition of taboo?

Dog Pound Film Review

Dog Pound FilmThe Film “Dog Pound” in the recent releases section on Netflix stars Adam Butcher, Shane Kippel, Mateo Morales and was directed by Kim Chapiron.  After seeing “Orange is the New Black” which is a sort of dramedy that takes place in a women’s correctional facility it was definitely a jolt and a half to see “Dog  Pound” which takes place in a male juvenile delinquent facility. This flick is an intense, nail-biting, cringe-fest and I loved it.

I’m not going to describe the plot because that’s what seeing the movie is for. What is important for me in a film review is to know that it’s a compelling story with outstanding acting and this one has both.  Adam Butcher, Shane Kippel, Mateo Morales and  Lawrence Bayne give outstanding performances along with practically all the rest of the supporting cast. I definitely felt like I had a taste of living in “juvie”. This is the kind of movie that makes you want to look over your shoulder.

If you enjoy shows like “Locked Up Abroad, I Survived, OZ” and Movies like “The Way Back, Midnight Express and Cool Hand Luke (Oldie)” then you’ll eat this up as I did.

Co-written by Director Kim Chapiron and Jeremie Delon the screenplay is gritty and screams forward like any well-oiled machinery.

The Iceman

Michael Shannon is the kind of actor who can take on any role and inhabit it so well you don’t even know he’s acting.  Shannon plays Richard Leonard “The Iceman” Kuklinski (April 11, 1935 – March 5, 2006) an American serial killer  who became a contract killer hired by the mafia. The film begins on  Kuclinski and his wife’s first date and from there explores how he fell into becoming a hitman which incidentally came quite naturally.  The supporting cast is as compelling as the the main character and lends a backbone to the film that will surely make this a classic akin to the likes of “Goodfellas” and “Casino”. It’s good to finally see Ray Liotta in a well-written role he can eat right up. Three surprising stand-out performances were from Winona Ryder, Chris Evans and David Schwimmer who each played out-of-their-genre so well… you could hardly recognize them…and that’s a big ole’ YAY.

Go out and see this film.

The Dynamiter

From the description of  “The Dynamiter” on Netflix this movie seemed like it had promise. I was pleasantly surprised, it had more than promise it had delivery. The main character Robbie Hendrick played quite intricately by William Ruffin was a well-rounded, intriguing character with the help of well written dialogue. I may even go so far as to say that William Ruffin was the movie and his presence kept me watching and caring what would happen.  On certain levels this film reminds me of another favorite “Shadrach”, with it’s seemingly simple, slow pace which hides a more complex, passionate struggle to survive, not to mention the beautiful cinematography. The moments of quiet contemplation by Robbie bring you right into his journey. I highly recommend this movie.
